Enriched cages for laying hens are a modernized poultry housing system, developed as an improvement over traditional battery cages. Originating from the EU’s regulatory initiatives on laying hen welfare, these cages are designed to ensure high egg production while providing hens with more space and the freedom to perform natural behaviors such as nesting, perching, scratching, and stretching, significantly improving their living conditions and overall well-being.
Although this system still uses cages, the enclosures are larger and offer more amenities. Compared to free-range systems, hens are kept in smaller groups, ranging from 16 to 60 birds per group. The housing includes curtained nesting areas where hens can perch and lay eggs, with 24-hour access to food and water. The height of the cages reduces contact with the manure belt from upper tiers, effectively lowering the risk of coccidiosis.
