The core production process of organic fertilizer from agricultural waste

Agricultural waste refers to plant residues generated from agricultural activities (mainly farming and gardening activities). Agricultural waste is the part of a crop that is not used as food for humans or animals. The residues of such crops are mainly stem and leaf parts. It is estimated that this waste can account for an average of 80% of a crop’s weight. The four most common crops are sugar cane, corn, cereals and rice. The combined weight of these four crops produced annually exceeds 16.5 billion metric tons. Since 80% of it will become agricultural waste, the amount is extremely considerable.

These agricultural wastes may have been simply discarded or burned in the past, but as awareness of environmental protection and resource recycling increases, people are paying more and more attention to how to effectively handle and utilize these wastes. A common practice is to use agricultural waste for the production of organic fertilizers, thereby recycling resources, improving soil quality, and promoting sustainable agriculture.

1. Collect agricultural waste

The core process of using agricultural waste to produce organic fertilizer includes several key steps, using special equipment to efficiently convert waste agricultural materials into high-quality organic fertilizer. The process begins by collecting a variety of agricultural waste, including straw, soybean meal, cottonseed meal, spent mushroom substrate, and other organic residues. These materials are the main raw materials for the production line.

After agricultural waste is collected, it is pre-processed using a crusher. Break down and homogenize the material in preparation for subsequent fermentation and composting stages. This pre-processing step is crucial to optimize the efficiency of the entire production process.

2. Dewatering

For agricultural waste, if the moisture content of organic fertilizer is higher than 70%, a dewatering machine can be used for dehydration; if the moisture content is lower than 70%, a dewatering machine may not be used.

Through dehydration treatment, the moisture content can be reduced and the stability of organic fertilizer can be improved. It can improve the fertilizer efficiency of organic fertilizer, extend its storage time, and facilitate storage and transportation.

Dehydration methods can include natural drying, dehydration machines, etc. The selection of the appropriate dehydration method depends on factors such as the nature of the raw materials, scale, and production environment.

3. Fermentation

The next critical stage is composting. ABC Machinery provides professional composting equipment: organic fertilizer fermentation tanks and compost turners. The equipment ensures proper aeration, turning, and humidity control, creating an environment conducive to microbial decomposition. Microorganisms play a central role in breaking down organic matter, creating compost rich in beneficial nutrients.

To enhance the fermentation process, organic microbial inoculants are often introduced. The addition of microbial formula further accelerates decomposition and contributes to the formation of high-quality organic matter. Throughout these stages, the use of turners, compost bins, and moisture control systems help maintain optimal conditions.

4. Granulation

The granulation process is the core part of the production line. We offer four types of granulation equipment(rotary drum granulator, disc granulator, flat die pellet mill, and ring die pellet mill) to meet your needs.

This equipment has wide applicability to raw materials, especially organic matter, and does not have strict requirements on raw material density and crushing fineness. The raw materials do not need to be dried, the granulation rate of the finished product is high, and the granulation performance is stable. The granules produced by this organic fertilizer granulator are not easily broken and have a uniform appearance. Moreover, there is no need to add water during the granulation process, which saves the cost of subsequent granule drying.

5. Drying and cooling

We offer rotary drum dryers and rotary drum coolers for drying and cooling cow manure organic fertilizers. Rotary dryers use hot air to reduce the moisture content of fertilizers. After drying, the moisture content of organic fertilizer is reduced from 20%-30% to 2%-5%. The new combined lifting plate is used to avoid the material wind tunnel phenomenon and help improve heating efficiency. 

The material cooler has become an indispensable and important part of the entire fertilizer processing process. Through the cooling process, the material removes about three percent of its moisture. It can also be combined with a rotary dryer to remove dust and purify waste gas, which can improve cooling efficiency and heat energy utilization, reduce labor intensity, and further remove moisture from fertilizers.

6. Screening

After cooling, there is still powdery material in the finished product, and the diameter of the particles produced by the granulator may have certain differences, and a screening machine needs to be used for screening and classification. The rotary drum screener has the characteristics of a simple structure, low noise, smooth operation, and small vibration. In addition, the upper part of the drum is equipped with a cleaning device, which can clean the screen during work to prevent clogging. This can fully improve screening speed and efficiency.

For large-capacity organic fertilizer production lines, we recommend that they be equipped with an automated return system. The unqualified particles after screening will be transported to the crusher by a belt conveyor for grinding again, and then continue to be granulated, which will help improve the continuous operation capacity of the production line.

7. Packing

8. QC

Quality control is crucial throughout the post-processing process. This includes testing and monitoring the nutrient content, moisture content, and microbial and heavy metal content of the product. Ensure that products comply with national and regional standards and regulations to ensure product safety and quality.
